This week at Studio Sprout we decorated masks! We used a variety of materials which made the possibilities absolutely endless.
Some materials we used were:
- Fleece sheets (that we cut into mask shapes)
- Glitter Glue
- White Glue or Hot Glue
- Gems
- Foam Shapes
- Pipe Cleaners
- Plastic Shapes
- Assorted Feathers
But other ideas might include:
To keep the project tidy, we used newsprint as our space to work on. We began the project with glitter glue because it doubles as both decoration and glue. As we worked we incorporated white glue when needed.
Masters Students (5Y+) worked with cool shot and low-temp glue guns. We used Popsicle sticks instead of fingers to press objects down and practiced counting slowly to three before touching hot glue spots.
When we introduced materials, we worked largest to smallest so each material would have the opportunity to shine and be visible. We introduced the feathers first, then the pipe cleaners, and then the foam shapes. These masks are truly an art in layering. Lastly we worked with the tiniest elements which were sequins and gems.
White glue masks took about a day to try. Once they dried, we hot glued elastic to complete the mask. The final pieces are magical, to say the least!
