Cardboard, tempera, scrap book paper, Oh MY! Inspired by Small Hands Big Art we dove into the world of Mixed Media combining drawing, painting and collage.
Materials Needed:

  • Cardboard, cut down.
  • Tempera Paint
  • Paper (we used scrapbook paper)
  • Glue
  • Pastels

Each student created one or three birds.

First paint your cardboard background with tempera paint. It’s best to use high quality tempera and mix in a little white to get opacity.
Then rub with  a waded up paper towel to blend and dry the tempera.
Paint circles for birds on top of the background.

Glue on scrapbook paper, old maps, dictionary pages, music sheets, etc. for  eyes, wings, and beaks. Some students had the interest in layering shapes for their features while others did single layers.

After the tempera is completely dry use chalk pastel for texture, high lights and details.
